I had an amazing experience learning to drive with Addy. From the very beginning he was patient, kind, and incredibly encouraging. He never dwelled on mistakes but calmly showed me how to correct them and worked through things with me until I got it right. He also made sure I didn’t dwell on mistakes myself, but learned from them and moved on with confidence. His instructions were always clear, he was never moody, and he never made lessons feel uncomfortable. We had good conversation, which really helped calm my nerves, especially on test day. Even when he picked me up for the test, he was jolly and reassuring, which made such a difference. Addy is an excellent instructor, professional, consistent, and genuinely supportive. I passed first time, and I would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to learn to drive. He’s a smooth operator!Posted on Google![]()

Why Learn Automatic in Roundshaw
Roundshaw is particularly useful because lesson difficulty can increase without spending a large part of the session travelling to another area.
A first-time learner can begin on an appropriate residential road, depending on traffic and pickup location. The early focus is on smooth braking, steering, moving away safely and checking properly before changing position.
Once those routines become reliable, Mollison Drive and Foresters Drive provide longer local connections through the neighbourhood.
Then the road environment changes again.
Sandy Lane South and Plough Lane form part of the B272 corridor, giving learners experience of more through-traffic and connections beyond the estate. Nearby Purley Way introduces a very different main-road environment with multiple lanes, retail traffic and larger junctions.
Driving west also leads naturally towards the roads covered by our automatic driving lessons in Wallington, where town traffic and the local test-centre area provide another stage in your development.
For an automatic learner, that progression is useful because your attention can stay on the road rather than switching constantly between observations and clutch control.
Why Roundshaw Learners Choose Vector Driving School
The best lessons are not the ones where you cover the greatest distance.
They are the ones where each road has a reason for being used.
If you’re working on observations, your instructor may choose an appropriate residential area where you have enough time to develop a repeatable routine.
If your next priority is junction planning, the lesson can move onto busier connecting roads.
When you’re ready for more independent driving, routes towards Purley Way, Wallington or Croydon give you much more to interpret without needing to leave the wider area completely.
Heading south also takes learners towards the road conditions covered by our automatic driving lessons in Purley, where suburban streets and larger through-routes create another useful contrast.
This approach stops lessons becoming a memorised Roundshaw circuit.
The aim is to teach you how to drive somewhere you don’t already know.
Automatic Driving Courses in Roundshaw we offer
We offer five types of automatic driving lessons in Roundshaw. Each one suits a different stage, from your very first controls to post-test confidence.
Beginner Automatic Lessons
Never driven before? Your beginner lessons start on quiet residential roads in Kenley, Woodcote, and Sanderstead. You'll learn the controls, moving off, and stopping before you go near busy traffic and we only add a new skill once the last one feels steady.
Intensive Automatic Course
Short on time? An intensive automatic course in Roundshaw packs your training into days rather than months. We book it around available test dates, so your lessons and test sit close together while everything's still fresh. Prefer a lighter load? A semi-intensive course spreads the same training across easier weeks.
Refresher Automatic Lessons
Refresher lessons suit two kinds of driver: anyone coming back after a break, and manual-licence holders switching to automatic. Either way, we start from what you already know and rebuild your road confidence at a comfortable pace.
Mock Tests and Test-Route Practice
A mock test copies the real thing on the Mitcham, West Wickham, and Morden routes. You'll practise the reversing manoeuvres, the "show me, tell me" questions, and the 20-minute independent-driving section. Your instructor marks it to DVSA standards, then shows you which faults to clear before the big day.
Post-Test: Pass Plus and Motorway Lessons
Your learning doesn't have to stop at your pass. Pass Plus covers the roads a test leaves out, and automatic motorway lessons get you ready for faster traffic. Both build the skills you'll lean on most as a new driver.
Automatic vs Manual: Which Is Right for You?
Roundshaw provides a good example of how an automatic can reduce workload without reducing the skill required from the driver.
You might begin on a residential road where parked vehicles and meeting traffic require careful positioning.
A few minutes later, you could be approaching the B272 where traffic is more continuous.
Move towards Purley Way and lane choice, road signs and larger junctions demand even more attention.
In a manual car, those changes in traffic speed also involve clutch control and selecting gears.
In an automatic, the vehicle deals with gear selection.
You still have to decide when to brake, whether a gap is safe and which lane you need.
Automatic driving removes a mechanical task; it does not remove the driver’s responsibility.
If you pass your practical test in an automatic vehicle, your licence will cover automatic vehicles only.
You would need another practical test in a manual vehicle if you later wanted to drive manual cars.
For somebody already planning to drive an automatic, hybrid or electric car, that may not be an important limitation.
Your First Automatic Lesson in Roundshaw : What to Expect
Your first lesson follows five simple steps, each building on the last, so you always know what’s coming.
First comes an eyesight check you’ll read a number plate at 20 metres, the same check the DVSA uses on test day. Your instructor then checks your provisional licence and answers any questions before you set off.
Next, you’ll start on quiet, low-traffic roads near your pickup point in Kenley, Sanderstead, or Woodcote. Your instructor talks you through the automatic controls accelerator, brake, and gear selector. With no clutch, you move off on one pedal and steer.
From there, you’ll practise moving off, stopping, and steering until each one feels natural, with your instructor on dual controls the whole time.
You’ll finish with a quick debrief: what went well, the next skill to learn, and a short progress note so your second lesson picks up right where this one left off.
Test Centres Near Roundshaw and DVSA Pass Rates
Roundshaw does not have its own practical driving test centre, but its location close to Wallington and Purley Way gives learners several options.
Wallington Driving Test Centre at Mint House, Stanley Park Road is one of the closest current centres.
There is also an important current point for learners considering Mitcham: as of October 2026, car tests booked under Mitcham are temporarily operating from the Hilton Hotel on Waddon Way beside Purley Way. Because temporary locations can change, always use the address shown on your actual DVSA booking confirmation.
| Test centre | Approx. distance from Roundshaw | 2025/26 overall car pass rate |
|---|---|---|
| Wallington (Mint House) | ~2–3 miles | Check current DVSA figure |
| Mitcham – current temporary car-test venue | ~2–3 miles | 47.0% |
| Sutton (Surrey) | ~4–5 miles | 47.7% |
| West Wickham (London) | ~5–6 miles | 51.6% |
The distances are approximate and will vary depending on where in Roundshaw you begin and traffic on the day.
A test-centre pass rate is not an “easy or hard” score.
It describes previous groups of candidates, not your personal chance of passing.
For Roundshaw learners, familiarity with the types of roads around the centre you actually book is more useful than travelling farther simply because another centre has a slightly higher historic percentage.
Once your practical test is confirmed, your instructor can make later lessons more relevant to that centre’s wider road environment while still avoiding route memorisation.

FAQs
How many automatic driving lessons will I need in Roundshaw?
Most learners need 20 to 30 hours of automatic driving lessons. If you’re nervous or brand new, you may need a little more; if you’re switching from a manual licence, often fewer. Your instructor gives you a personal estimate after your first-lesson assessment.
Do you offer intensive automatic courses in Roundshaw?
We run intensive and semi-intensive automatic courses in Roundshaw, booked around your test date so your lessons and test stay close together. An intensive course trains over days; a semi-intensive one spreads it across lighter weeks.
How much do automatic driving lessons cost in Roundshaw?
After that, it’s £39 an hour or £78 for two hours, and block bookings work out at £38 an hour. Test-day car hire is £120.
Can I switch from manual to automatic?
Yes. Refresher automatic lessons start from what you already know and rebuild your confidence in an automatic at your own pace. They’re ideal for manual-licence holders and anyone returning after a break.
How old do you need to be to start driving lessons?
You can start at 17 — the age you’re legally allowed to drive a car on public roads. You can apply for your provisional licence from 15 years and 9 months, so it’s ready before your first lesson.
Can I take driving lessons without a provisional licence?
No. You’ll need a valid UK provisional driving licence before your first lesson on public roads. You can apply on gov.uk from 15 years and 9 months — just make sure it arrives before you drive.
How many lessons do I need before my test?
Book your test when you’re driving test-ready, not by a set number of lessons. Most people get there after regular lessons plus some private practice, and automatic learners often get there sooner. Your instructor will confirm you’re ready against the official DVSA standards.

About Roundshaw, uk
Roundshaw is a residential area on the southern side of Wallington in the London Borough of Sutton. It forms part of the South Beddington and Roundshaw ward and is mainly associated with the SM6 postcode area.
Its road layout is very different from a traditional village centre.
Mollison Drive is one of the neighbourhood’s main internal routes and is home to local facilities including the Phoenix Centre and Wallington Primary Academy.
Foresters Drive runs along the Roundshaw Downs side of the area and connects with roads including Plough Lane and Sandy Lane South.
The open land is one of Roundshaw’s most distinctive features.
Roundshaw Downs and Roundshaw Park create a large green area beside the residential neighbourhood, giving parts of the estate a noticeably more open character than nearby Wallington or Croydon.
Roundshaw also has an unusual aviation connection.
Much of the area occupies land connected with the former Croydon Airport, and that history can still be seen in local street names.
Names such as Mollison Drive, Lindbergh Road, Brabazon Avenue, Avro Way and Hawker Close reflect people, aircraft and companies associated with aviation.
Even Foresters Drive is connected with that history: it was created when part of the old Plough Lane route was altered during the expansion of Croydon Airport.
